Hi Annmarie, That sounds like a really tough situation -- but don't give up. An attorney would be a good place to start to get some advice about your options. If you can't afford an attorney, you can may be eligible for legal aid in South Carolina. Also, consider contacting the South Carolina Dept. of Social Services. They have a help line for women at (800) 868-0404, and they may be able to provide additional local resources to help you out.

i been with my kids father for 13 going on 14yrs, we been married for 6yrs. ever since he went in the navy, he’s a different person. the lies, the women, the disrespect, the hurt he put on this family, i don’t know what to do any more. we’re from ny but we move to sc because of the navy. he turned his back on us. the navy won’t help me and my kids, and we don’t know or have anyone out here for us. the navy knows this. my husband has 2 jobs, 1 navy and 2 he’s a x-ray tech off base. if i didn’t have a job me and my kids would be doing real bad. his money goes on the street and women. what should i do? because i’m about to snap or go to jail.

Not knowing your spouse’s location could complicate matters. Talking to an attorney in your area would be your best bet.

And if you and your spouse split bills 50/50, leaving one with lots of discetionary income and the other with almost none, how can income be considered as a household? For ex., I can’t force my spouse to share his income, I don’t have the benefit of it at all except he’s someone I can split fixed expenses with. (Not what I envisioned premaritally, obviously.) It’s a very tough spot to be in and in a way, maybe a icommunal prop state is better because there can’t be this inequality of resources. But the law only helps if you get divorced, unfortunately. I realize most people want to share with their spouses but sadly not all do.
